ATHLETE

 Teachable spirit/Coachable

§         Eye contact with your coach when taking a correction and great body language

§         I will learn something when I am being corrected

§         I take a correction as a compliment

§         “Thank you coach” for believing that I can improve

 

§         No eye contact with coach when being corrected

§         You feel like you are being picked on

§         You walk away from the coach and give an excuse

§         (Excuses are not part of an athletes vocabulary)

Discipline and Poise

§         Focused attention and effort

§         Understand your personal responsibilities

§         Sportsmanship – How much will I take from an opponent who is talking trash etc. = How important is your team to you? (I will not hurt the team)

§         100% effort, 100% of the time

 

§         Demonstrate anger

§         Demonstrate frustration

§         Discourage your teammates

§         Encourage your opponents

Mental Toughness

§         Stay positive, enthusiastic and confident no matter what happens

§         You can not break my spirit

§         Practice hard, when the practice is hard

§         Love lacrosse, not the attention

§         I play/compete to see who can push the hardest, who has the most heart

§         Fast recovery ability from a mistake (W.I.N. = What is important now)

 

§         Easily discouraged

§         Every bump in the road has a negative effect

Accountability and Work Habits

§         Work hard when the coach is not looking

§         “Coach it was my fault, I will take care of it”

§         If you make a mistake, your teammates think you must of tripped or something else caused the mistake

 

§         Slack off when the coach is not looking

§         Always  have an excuse or point fingers

§         If you make a mistake, your teammates think I am not surprised, he never listens, he does not try hard

Great Teammate

§         Selfless

§         Needs of team first in every decision (sleep, diet, weekend, punctual, school work etc.)

§         Do not try to take attention away from team

 

§         Selfish

§         Selective participant (see below)

§         Believe your talent is enough

§         Me first, team second

Integrity

§         Core values and behavior is aligned

§         Depth of character shown in honesty, sincerity, reliability, respect, humility and loyalty

§         Your handshake is binding, it seals the deal

§         Keeping commitments

 

§         Talk the talk, but do not walk the walk

§         Decide when you will and will not follow team standards

§         You are willing to compromise you beliefs

 

Academic Responsibility

§         Use lessons from athletics in the classroom

§         Use discipline of focused attention and effort, understand that confidence comes from preparation

§         Teachable spirit

§         Accountable for your own work habits

§         Best effort and attitude in class each day

 

 

§         Not learned the positive lessons from sport

§         Procrastinate

§         Make excuses and blame others

Confidence

§         Quiet inner confidence based on preparation

§         Based on belief and belief is based on consistency of accomplishments through daily work habits

§         Confuse confidence with boasting, bragging, showing off and drawing attention to themselves

Pride

§         Demonstration of humility (Do not need attention)

§         DIMITT (Determination is more important than talent)

 

§         False pride – “look at me, I am great”

§         After a loss = “We got robbed”, “we are no good”

§         Sense of entitlement

§         Normal rules should not apply to me because I was born with talent

§         Being an athlete does not serve as a guarantee for special treatment

Leadership

§         Lead by serving the team with honor and respect

§         First to volunteer, seeing every job as “our job”

§         Model of values, standards and covenants of team

§         Honor the game and their family, respect authority, accepts judgments of officials, respect opponents, and teammates

 

 

 

§         Threatened by the success of others, or by the roles other teammates are given

§         Confuse leadership with being the “boss”
